Moving your FTData files and FDLAUNCHERRORLOG in Clustered SQL Server 2008

Scenario: I have given a new storage by SAN team to move my database files and logs from old drive to the new storage. All database files and logs files have been successfully migrated to the new storage. But how do you move your files for your FullText Daemon Launcher (FTData Folder and FDLAUNCHERRORLOG) service.

Solution: All this is done via modifying values in the registry editor. But before you do this, you need to test this solution in a staging or test server before moving on to your production environment. Also since this involves modifying registry values, it is necessary to take extra precautions when making changes. I always have the old values saved to a location somewhere in case something goes wrong with my changes.

Stop your SQL full-text filter daemon launcher service from SQL Server Configuration Manager.

To change the location of the FTData folder, go to the following location.

“HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.<INSTANCEID>\Setup\FullTextDefaultPath”

Modify this value with the new location that you have.

Start your SQL full-text filter daemon launcher service from SQL Server Configuration Manager.

“SQL Server Fulltext Filter Daemon Launcher” service will be up and running even though the FDLAUNCHERRORLOG is not getting generated. For this log file, you may save it your default Server Log folder and grant necessary permissions to the folder.

Then you can test failing over your cluster to verify that everything is in place.
